Join Dr. Humberto Boncristiani in a virtual discussion on beekeeping.

The honeybee Apis mellifera is the most valuable insect to humans. In the last decade, honey bees are facing an intriguing decline in population. Research points to multi-factor causes to explain the decline but without a doubt, the role of Varroa mite and especially the viruses this dangerous honey bee pest transmits is considered the main problem in beekeeping nowadays.
Dr. Humberto Boncristiani will go over the fascinating aspect of the interaction between honey bees, Varroa mites, and viruses in an easy-to-understand way. Dr. Boncristiani will translate the intriguing mechanism of how viruses cause diseases in honey bees, the role of Varroa mite and speculate on how beekeepers could interfere in the process, to help honey bees.

Dr. Humberto Boncristiani is the honey bee husbandry applied researcher at the University of Florida Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab. Boncristiani has a diverse background in honey bee research, having worked in a government institution (USDA), academia (UNCG, UMD), private industry, with the National Research Council, and having come from a beekeeping family. At the Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab, Boncristiani conducts honey bee husbandry research that is directly applicable to commercial beekeeper operations in the state of Florida and across the country.
