Natural Pigments & Dyes: Senior Series

An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Monday, repeating until September 30, 2019
The Natural Pigments & Dyes: Senior Series is a dynamic 8-week course on consecutive Monday mornings (August 5 – September 30, except Labor Day), facilitating artistic learning with older adults (55+ years). Working collaboratively, participants will learn the fundamentals of natural dyeing- the process, the materials (fibers), the plants— covering multiple styles of hot and cold process dyes, as well as methods for direct color transfer. This knowledge will be applied to a project of their choosing, utilizing an array of fibers techniques covered in the class. At the start of the series, individual abilities and confidence levels will be assessed to ensure a quality experience for all participating. Each student brings with them an innate set of skills and perspective which will be encouraged throughout the series, and personal style and self-expression are emphasized.

Teaching Artist Bio: Katie Vota is a Chicago-based artist working to create interactive environments and objects that engage viewers in ideas of shaping identity.
Vota received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (2010, magna cum laude) and a Studio MFA from the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago (2015). She was awarded a US Student Fulbright Grant (’11-’12) to study traditions of Andean Back-strap Weaving and Natural Dyeing in Cusco, Peru, with the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco.
Vota has exhibited in numerous solo and juried exhibitions, at venues including Threewalls (Chicago), The Leroy Neiman Center Gallery (Chicago), Pratt MPW School of Art Gallery (Utica, NY), The Krasl Art Center (St. Joseph, MI), The Indianapolis Art Center (Indianapolis), and Area 405 (Baltimore). She is a Lenore Tawney Foundation Scholar, and has participated in residencies such as Corner Gallery’s Individual Artist Residency, the Chicago Artists Coalition’s Field/Work residency, and Crosshatch (formerly the Institute for Sustainable Art and Natural Design) in Traverse City, MI.
Cancellation Policy: If you find this class date no longer works for you, we will gladly refund your money if it is more than two weeks prior to the class date. If it is within two weeks, we can either move your registration to a different class date or you can use the money as a credit towards another class offering before the end of our fiscal year (June 30).
