One Earth Film Festival Screening
March 7, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
One Earth Film Festival returns to Garfield Park Conservatory for screenings of multiple short films!
Urban Nature
FILM DESCRIPTION: Take a walk on the wild side with host Marcus Kronforst and WTTW tracking animal and plant life in the urban jungle of Chicago, New York, and San Francisco in several of these 16-part short film series.
Searching for the Gold Spot: The Wild After Wildfire Maya Khosla/2017/31 min/Conservation
FILM DESCRIPTION: This short film is about the rapid and amazing comeback of the wild in forests after wildfire. The story follows teams of scientists and firefighters through the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades Mountains and beyond, and shows hundreds of living, breathing reasons why our publicly owned forests need to be saved from large-scale logging projects. The teams find rare black-backed woodpeckers, goshawks, spotted owls, their young, and many other animals using post-fire forests — a surprise and a new sense of hope for all.
The local spin: County Forest Preserve Districts, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and many land conservation organizations use annual controlled burns to manage their natural areas. Fire removes non-native species and rejuvenates seed banks that bring new life to Illinois woodlands, savannas and prairies.
