Closing Reception How Do I Tell My Story?

June 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Garfield Park Conservatory invites you to an interactive workshop that teaches the importance of one’s local, familial, and individual stories. The workshop is an extension of the exhibit Meeting History: A Garfield Park Citizen Archive, on view until June 21st.

Led by local community members and experts in their creative fields, Gina Jamison, Annette Britton, and Levette Haynes, and Chicago artist Samantha Friend Cabrera, attendees will learn how personal stories can be valued and remembered in different ways. Here, they will have the opportunity to explore creative mediums of storytelling (visual, written, performed) in a fun, supportive environment.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a picture copy of a favorite memory to the workshop, though nothing is needed to attend.

Meeting History: A Garfield Park Citizen Archive is a collaboration between the CatchLight Local Visual Desk, led by CatchLight Local Fellow Samantha Friend Cabrera, in collaboration with CatchLight, ProPublica, and the Institute for Nonprofit News, and made possible with generous support from the Kresge Foundation, McCormick Foundation and PhotoWings.

With gratitude to the community members who participated including Annette Britton, Rev. Dr. Marshall Elijah Hatch Sr. and Marshall Hatch Jr., Levette Haynes, Gina Jamison, LaShone Kelly, and Shacarra Westbrooks. The exhibition was curated by Samantha Friend Cabrera with support from Max Herman and Jenny Jacklin Stratton.
