PrintLife: Relief Printmaking Art Class for Individuals age 55+

An event every week that begins at 9:00 am on Wednesday, repeating until December 14, 2022
Garfield Park Conservatory has teamed up with Teaching Artist Juarez Hawkins to offer an 8-week printmaking art class. Classes will take place both in-person at Garfield Park Conservatory. This class is intended for individuals age 55+ only.
In this class, we will explore an assortment of printmaking methods, including speedy-cut, stamping, monotype, and alternative printing plates. We will examine ways of altering our prints using collage and mixed media. We will examine works by printmakers past and present, and explore how printmaking can be used as a vehicle for our personal stories.
Do you want to try an art class, but don’t know where to begin? Do you have art skills and are seeking new directions? Do you want to create designs that can be printed on fabric, greeting cards and gift wrap, as well as limited editions? Do you want cool artmaking activities that can be done with the family? Then this class is for you!
Teaching Artist Bio:
Juarez Hawkins (she/her), a native of Chicago, is an artist, educator and curator. She received her B.A. from Northwestern University, and her M.A. from Columbia College.
Recent exhibitions include Emergence: Intersections at the Center at the South Side Community Art Center; Well-Behaved Women at the Lubeznik Art Center; and ICONIC Black Panther at the Stony Island Arts Bank. For over 25 years, she has exhibited with Sapphire and Crystals, a collective of African American female artists.
Printmaking projects include The Dream Deferred: 31 Diverse Artists Respond to Racial Injustice in America; Raise It Up! print fundraiser for the South Side Community Art Center; and Superstitions, hosted by Arceo Press.
Her recent curatorial projects include Black Clay: A Survey of African American Ceramics at Chicago State University; Radical Futures at the Museum of Contemporary Art; and Bill Walker: Urban Griot at the Hyde Park Art Center.

This class will take place on Wednesday morning from 9:00am – 11:00am on the following dates. Most of the classes will be on-site at the Conservatory, with November 30 as a virtual class with a potential to be on site for studio time.
