Virtual Beekeeping Lecture with Dr. Katie Lee

November 3, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

REGISTER

Do healthy queens lead to healthy colonies?

A healthy queen is vital for a colony to thrive. The ability to predict the downfall of a queen can help a beekeeper make the management decision to replace a queen or leave her be. This talk covers what queen failure looks like, if colony signs like brood pattern can help beekeepers read the health of a queen, and the impact of queen age on the productiveness of a colony.

Dr. Katie Lee works for the University of Minnesota as a researcher and the Apiculture Extension Educator. Katie received her MS and PhD in entomology from the University of Minnesota with Dr. Marla Spivak. Her work focuses on the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, metrics that indicate queen bee and colony health, and the benefits of pollinator plantings on honey bee health. She developed a parasitic mite sampling protocol that is now a nationwide standard. For the Bee Informed Partnership, she founded two Tech-Transfer Teams that provide services for commercial beekeepers by assessing colony health and testing breeding stock for disease resistance behavior. Katie serves on the boards of the Bee Informed Partnership, the Minnesota Hobby Beekeepers Association, and the American Beekeeping Federation.
