Botanical Drawing: Virtual Class

The Garfield Park Conservatory has teamed up with artist Katia Pérez Fuentes to offer a 6-week online drawing course that takes place in the comfort of your own homes! Perez will be leading us through a series of practices using line, texture, and patterns found in nature. We will be taking inspiration from the plant life at the Conservatory and building a creative practice to depict our surrounding environments. In this course, Pérez will guide us in connecting with our bodies and spirits through the playful exploration of color, movement and visual language. The course will have elements of abstraction and representational drawings, along with self reflective prompts for participants to strengthen their introspection. All skill levels and abilities welcomed. This course is bilingual; it potentially can be facilitated in English, Spanish, or both languages based on need. The culmination of our course will include a digital group show of our planted drawings.
This course takes place on September 15, 22 29 & October 6, 13 & 20 on Tuesdays from 11:00am-1:00pm with a culminating event. Culminating event date TBD by class participants.

Volunteers/Members: $144
Materials: approximately $40
A list of materials will be provided for students to purchase on their own. Materials will total approximately $40. You’re also welcome to use supplies you already have!

Katia Pérez Fuentes (they/ella) is a queer, non-binary Latinx artist and cultural producer. Perez’s studio work includes murals, paintings, drawings, and facilitating creative programming. Their practice is a vessel for translating the accumulation of research and intuitive observations into visual language by using patterns of color, words, and symbolic metaphors. KPF is fascinated with the dichotomies between labor and leisure. They understand leisure as stimulating activities that exist beyond the production/consumption cycle of capitalism. Perez centers enriching occupations of time, which includes various forms of learning, play, worship, celebration, and rest. Their art serves as an access point to honor resilience through moments of introspection, radical vulnerability, and joy. KPF comes from an immigrant family of manual laborers and domestic caretakers who migrated to Albuquerque, NM. In 2018 they became a first-generation college graduate with leadership recognition from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Pérez has over five years of experience leading equity initiatives as a community organizer and museum professional of color. Most recently, their collaborative murals in Chicago have been recognized as part of a MacArthur Creative Placemaking Award.
