Natural Dyeing and Watercolor Paint Making with Avocado Pits

Flyer for upcoming program, Natural Dyeing and Watercolor Paint Making with Avocado Pits. This hands-on workshop will be taking place in the Classroom on Saturday afternoon, July 20th from 12pm-2:30pm. The cost of admission is $80 for the general public and $60 for community, members, and volunteers. Scholarships are available; applications will be accepted through July 12th at 5pm.

Join us to learn about natural dyeing with avocado pits and leave with a naturally dyed silk bandana designed by you!

In this class, you will learn:

  • Natural dyeing basic principles
  • How to prepare and naturally dye silk fabrics
  • How to create dye baths from food waste
  • What some of the best materials are for creating colorfast dyes, and what materials to avoid
  • Simple resist design techniques
  • How to care for naturally dyed fabrics.

During this workshop, instructor Kristin Field will guide participants through designing and dyeing a silk bandana to take home. Participants will also learn how to create pigments from leftover dye baths and how to use that pigment to make natural watercolor paint.

This program will take place on Saturday, July 20th, at Garfield Park Conservatory in the Classroom from 12pm-2:30pm.

About Kristin

Kristin Field is a textile artist, natural dyer, and gardener. Kristin was the 2023-2024 Textiles Artist-in-Residence with Lillstreet Art Center and the 2023 Summer Maker-In-Residence with the Chicago Public Library. She is a board member for The WasteShed and was previously the Adult Experiential Learning Manager with the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance.

Refunds: For all fee-based programs and tours, we are able to provide full refunds up to two weeks prior to the program date. Within two weeks, we can offer a credit for a future class, or a refund in the event that we have a waitlist for the program and we can fill your spot.
