Join us at Garfield Park Conservatory and Gardens to celebrate Earth Month with our friends at the WasteShed! Explore the fundamentals of hand weaving while creating a one-of-a-kind woven piece using reclaimed and unexpected materials. This beginner-friendly workshop introduces participants to frame loom weaving, emphasizing experimentation, texture, and creative reuse. Participants will use natural materials alongside donated textiles to create sustainable art pieces inspired by the Garfield Park Conservatory and Gardens collections and the natural world.

Event Details: 

When: Saturday, April 25 from 9am to 12pm.

Where: Garfield Park Conservatory and Gardens. This program will be hosted in the Jensen room.

Please note: Due to ongoing renovations of the Conservatory’s lobby, this workshop will be held in the Jensen room partially during public hours. The workshop will be in a shared space with the temporary Conservatory Gift Shop.
Participants will be able to explore the Conservatory before it is open to the public, but be advised that the Chicago Park District Staff will be conducting watering and general maintenance of the collection during the 9am to 10am hour.

This class is for adult aged 18+

Registration closes on Friday, April 24 at 5pm.

All materials provided: looms, textiles, yarn/thread for weft and warp, weaving tools, and natural materials.

About the Instructor: Vahnaree Weiss (she/her) is currently studying at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a creative reuse specialist at The WasteShed. Her focus is in Fiber and Material Studies, so her chosen mediums are typically sculpture and textile based. She is experienced in printmaking, fashion design, and 2D mediums as well. Her works are primarily found objects and recycled materials! Vahnaree has taught creative reuse weaving at The WasteShed, The Evanston Art Center, and the Chicago Public Library.
